Hip Hop

Hip Hop is a urban ethnic dance style that has gained tremendous popularity in the last 2 decades. It has also been popular in Shanghai, especially in the last few years.

Hip Hop is coming mostly from American street culture and it borrows or expands on many moves from African Dance and Reggae Dancehall. It is an improvisational, high energy, explosive style of dance.

Hip Hop includes many different variations and techniques, such as:

  • Breaking
  • Popping
  • Locking
  • Krumping
  • Free styling
  • And more…

The jumps, breakages, and rotations are combined in an informal, creative way.

Because it is a newer style and comes from the street, Hip Hop is not as codified as many other types of dance.

Hip Hop has many steps and tricks that are not found anywhere else, and they do not necessarily have a formal name or technique. This gives the dancer more power to dance freely and express him or herself. The teaching style is also more informal and easy.

In our Hip Hop class, you will learn a combination of the techniques above. From the basic moves to the most recent tricks, you will practice different routines and progressively develop your own style.

We offer several Hip Hop classes weekly in Shanghai Souldancing. No previous experience is necessary. If you are interested in Hip Hop, you may also want to check our Afro Dance and Reggae Dancehall classes.
