The word yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. It refers to the union between the mind, body and spirit.

While there are many different forms of Yoga, outside India, the term yoga is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its asanas (postures). This is the form of Yoga we teach in Souldancing Studio.

Hatha Yoga is a particular system of Yoga created by Yogi Swatmarama in 15th century India. It focuses on the purification of the physical body as leading to the purification of the mind.

For some people, the physical practice of yoga becomes a gateway into spiritual exploration, while others just enjoy a wonderful low-impact workout that makes them feel great.

Many celebrities, including Madonna, Meg Ryan and Gwyneth Paltrow, practice yoga daily and rave about the benefits.

Many people assume that yoga is like stretching. While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility.

This is done through performing diverse postures that induce specific physical and mental benefits.

Some of the benefits of yoga practice include:

  • Better health overall
  • Increased energy
  • Increased mental clarity, improved focus
  • Better posture
  • Enhanced muscle tone
  • Better sleep
  • Weight loss
  • Relaxation, stress relief
  • Enhanced mood

Yoga helps your body maintain a stable relationship with itself while going into a calm, neutral state of peace. It is particularly useful as a stress-reliever and to enhance your general well-being.
